ABOUT THE WORK August Macke's Little Walter's Toys was created in 1912 and the painting is in Stadelsches Kunstinstitut Frankfurt. The original size of the work is 50,5 x 60,4 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Macke often chose motifs from his family environment for his depictions. He repeatedly portrayed his first son, Walter, born on April 13, 1910. He is not shown here, however, but represented by his toys. Stuffed animals, balls, and a Russian matryoshka doll were arranged by the artist on a tablecloth. Through the radiant colors and contours of the objects, Macke flattened the pictorial structure. This style of painting can be traced back to his intensive engagement with the works of Henri Matisse, whose influence was noticeable between 1910 and 1912. The Artist: August Macke (1887 – 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider).
