ABOUT THIS PIECE Asher Brown Durand's Dover Plains, Dutchess County, New York was created in 1848 and is in Smithsonian American Art Museum Washington D.C. The size of the work is 107,9 x 153,7 cm and is made of oil on canvas. The Artist: Asher Brown Durand (1796 - 1886) was an American engraver and painter of the Hudson River School. Durand's main interest changed from engraving to oil painting about 1830 with the encouragement of his patron, Luman Reed. In 1837, he accompanied his friend Thomas Cole on a sketching expedition to Schroon Lake in the Adirondacks Mountains, and soon after he began to concentrate on landscape painting.
