ABOUT THIS PIECE Arnold Böcklin's Ulysses and Calypso was created in 1882 and is in Kunstmuseum Basel. The size of the work is 103,5 x 149,8 cm and is made of oil on canvas. The painting is part of the extensive complex of studies and paintings in which Böcklin takes up material from ancient mythology. The central protagonists can be identified as Odysseus and Calypso primarily through the depiction of the island and the addition of the lyre as an attribute of the female figure. Their story is recorded in the fifth canto of Homer's Odyssey. Odysseus gets stranded on the island of Ogygia during his wanderings and meets the nymph Calypso, who is in love with him. Instead of agreeing to live with the nymph, Odysseus follows his longing for his home and his wife Penelope and is allowed to move on at the behest of the gods. Böcklin stages the ancient myth as a tense, tragic relationship between man and woman. The Artist: Arnold Böcklin (1827 - 1901) was a Swiss symbolist painter. Böcklin’s symbolist use of imagery derived from mythology and legend often overlapped with the aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelites.
