ABOUT THIS PIECE Symbolist Painter Arnold Böcklin's Play of the Nereides was created in 1886 and the painting is in Kunstmuseum Basel. The original size of the work is 150,5 x 176,4 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Through the intervention of the Basel art history professor Jacob Burckhardt, who was a friend of Böcklin, the Basel Public Art Collection acquired the painting the same year it was created. Böcklin has already dealt with mythological sea creatures in previous pictures. Andrea Linnebach sees parallels to Heinrich Heine's "North Sea" cycles (1825/26) in his sea pictures, especially in "The Game of the Nereids" (Linnebach 1991, pp. 23–24). The Artist: Arnold Böcklin (1827 - 1901) was a Swiss symbolist painter. Böcklin’s symbolist use of imagery derived from mythology and legend often overlapped with the aesthetic of the Pre-Raphaelites.
