ABOUT THIS PIECE Antonio Canaletto's The Stonemason's Yard was created in 1725 and is in National Gallery London. The size of the work is 123,8 x 162,9 cm and is made of oil on canvas. This intimate view of Venice, weatherbeaten and dilapidated, is one of Canaletto’s masterpieces. In the early morning sun, workmen chisel away at pieces of stone. Everyday life continues around them: a mother rushes to comfort her crying child, watched by a woman on the balcony above. The Artist: Antonio Canaletto (1697 – 1768), was an Italian painter of city views or vedute, of Venice, Rome, and London. Much of Canaletto's early artwork was painted "from nature", differing from the then customary practice of completing paintings in the studio.
