ABOUT THE WORK Neoclassic Painter Anselm Feuerbach's Portrait of a Roman Woman was created in 1866 and the painting is in Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt. The original size of the work is 98 x 81 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Feuerbach was driven by a longing for the grandeur of past times. Antiquity and the Italian Renaissance were his world. The son of an archaeologist, who lived in Rome for many years, staged his models as if they came from a distant time. In her monumentality and coolness, the Roman woman in the white tunic, despite her attention to detail, is more reminiscent of a statue than a living woman. The artist depicted his lover Anna Risi – called Nanna – more than twenty times, seeing in her the embodied ideal of classical beauty. The Artist: Anselm Feuerbach (1829 - 1880) was a German painter. He was the leading classicist painter of the German 19th-century school.
