ABOUT THIS PIECE Angelica Kauffman's The Sorrow of Telemachus was created in 1783 and the original painting is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. In this painting, Calypso motions her nymphs to be silent when their songs about Telemachus’s father, Ulysses, cause him sorrow. Kauffman’s subjects are taken from François Fénelon’s romance The Adventures of Telemachus, first published in 1699. The Artist: Angelica Kauffman (1741 - 1807) was a Swiss Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. Remembered primarily as a history painter, Kauffmann was a skilled portraitist, landscape and decoration painter.
