ABOUT THE WORK Even though Jawlensky's this painting is reduced to a minimum of form, the artist of the Blue Rider group combined such works—simple only at first glance—with the search for a universally valid archetype of the human face. The series of Abstract Heads, begun in 1918, comprises 251 works that oscillate between abstraction and figuration. The deeply religious Russian, who saw himself in the cultural tradition of Russian and Byzantine art, consciously referenced icon painting in his works. The Artist: Alexej von Jawlensky (1864 - 1941) was a Russian expressionist painter active in Germany. He was a key member of the New Munich Artist's Association (Neue Künstlervereinigung München), Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group and later the Die Blaue Vier (The Blue Four).
