ABOUT THIS PIECE Albrecht Dürer's Melencolia I was created in 1514 and the work is in Metropolitan Museum of Art New York. The original size of the work is 24 x 18,5 cm and is made of engraving on paper. Melencolia I is a depiction of the intellectual situation of the artist and is thus, by extension, a spiritual self-portrait of Dürer. In medieval philosophy each individual was thought to be dominated by one of the four humors; melancholy, associated with glack gall, was the least desirable of the four, and melancholics were considered the most likely to succumb to insanity. The Artist: Albrecht Dürer, (1471 - 1528) painter and printmaker generally regarded as the greatest German Renaissance artist. His vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings.
