ABOUT THIS PIECE Renaissance Painter Albrecht Altdorfer's The Battle of Alexander at Issus was created in 1529 and the painting is in Alte Pinakothek, Munchen. The original size of the work is 158 x 120 cm and is made of oil on panel. The victory over the King of Persia, Darius III, at Issus in 333 BC helped strengthen Alexander the Great’s position as ruler over the eastern Mediterranean. The painting gives an impression of the extent of this vast empire. Altdorfer orientated his work on the cartographic material of his time. The panel with the Latin inscription that was later altered provides details and the casualties of this battle. The red cord attached draws the eye to the protagonists. The picture is part of a cycle of history paintings that Duke William IV commissioned for the Residence in Munich. The Artist: Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480 - 1538) was a German painter, engraver and architect of the Renaissance working in Regensburg, Bavaria. Along with Lucas Cranach the Elder and Wolf Huber he is regarded to be the main representative of the Danube School setting biblical and historical subjects against landscape backgrounds of expressive colours
