ABOUT THIS PIECE Albert Bierstadt's Sunrise in the Sierras was created in 1872 and is in Smithsonian American Art Museum Washington D.C. The size of the work is 34,3 x 47,9 cm and is made of oil on paper mounted on canvas. In 1872, Albert Bierstadt traveled deep into Kings River canyon in the South Sierra Nevada with the geologist Clarence King. He created many paintings on this trip, believing that people back East would be fascinated by images of the distant western states. In Sunrise in the Sierras the sunlight bouncing off the tips of the mountains emphasizes the vivid color of the rock against the dark, unfinished foreground. The Artist: Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902) was a German-American painter best known for his lavish, sweeping landscapes of the American West. He joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion to paint the scenes.
