ABOUT THIS PIECE Agnolo Bronzino's A Young Woman and Her Little Boy was created in c. 1540 and is in National Gallery of Art Washington D.C. The size of the work is 99,5 x 76 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Who is this elegant lady? A noblewoman surely, and most likely a member of the court of Cosimo I de' Medici, Duke of Florence in the mid-sixteenth century. Her ornate and costly attire establish her as an aristocrat. She holds herself rigidly with the controlled demeanor that distinguishes portraits of members of Cosimo's court. Bronzino was the principal portraitist to the court, and one wonders how much his own coldly idealized, polished style of painting may, itself, have contributed to the taste for the marble-hard perfection and chilly hauteur of his models. The Artist: Agnolo Bronzino (1503 - 1572), was an Italian Mannerist painter from Florence. He lived all his life in Florence, and from his late 30s was kept busy as the court painter of Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was mainly a portraitist but also painted many religious subjects, and a few allegorical subjects.
