ABOUT THE WORK Post Impressionist Painter Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers was created in 1888 and the painting is in Neue Pinakothek München. The original size of the work is 92 x 73 cm and is made of oil on canvas. Vincent van Gogh intended this picture, painted in August 1888, of radiant color and exuberant vitality, to adorn his studio in Arles, where he planned to paint together with Paul Gauguin. The painter depicted the vase, flowers, base, and background in a simple, highly two-dimensional manner. The icy turquoise of the ground greatly enhances the yellow and yellow-brown tones, so that the flowers evoke images of summery Provence and a glowing life—in both senses of the word—like that led by van Gogh himself. The flower here symbolizes the sun, which the artist understood as a symbol of life and depicted as such in several of his works. The simple form and strong color scheme are inspired by Japanese printmaking, thus also revealing connections to the so-called Cloisonnism of Gauguin's circle. Just as van Gogh conceived the south of France in a comprehensive sense as "Japan," where a happy life could be realized, "Sunflowers" also testify to this great idea. The Munich painting is not the only version of "Sunflowers" that van Gogh painted, but it is a particularly important one. The Artist: Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.
