ABOUT THE WORK Paul Klee's The Goldfish was created in 1925 and the original painting is in Hamburger Kunsthalle. The original size of the work is 49,6 x 69,2 cm and is made of oil and watercolours on paper, mounted on cardboard. Mysteriously luminous, as if filled with inner fire, the large golden-yellow fish shines against a blue-black background. Smaller fish retreat reverently before its majestic aura – as if witnessing an epiphany, the appearance of the divine. Paul Klee's painting can be understood not only as an image of the divine, but also as a metaphor for artistic creation. The simplest graphic abbreviations emerge from the darkness: wavy and zigzag lines, which take shape as they come into the light – from the simplest medium, the line, an entire pictorial cosmos emerges before our eyes. In many ways, Klee thus created a painted vision of origin. His enchanting submarine intermediate realm owes its inspiration to a very real source: his fascination with the aquarium, that "sea in a glass" as a miniature version of the oceanic realm, a breeding ground for creativity. The artist had already admired the famous aquarium in Naples on his trip to Italy in 1902, and when he was working on the painting "The Goldfish" in the spring of 1925, there was a large aquarium in his studio in Dessau. The Artist: Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality.
