ABOUT THE WORK Franz von Stuck's The Sin (Die Sünde) was created in 1912 and is in Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin. The size of the work is 88 x 52,5 cm and is made of oil on canvas. In 1893, one of the first versions of the hugely popular "Sin" caused a great stir at the Munich Secession exhibition. Until 1912, Stuck made several variations of the memorable motif: From a greenish darkness, the naked torso of a woman shines, its brightness underscored by her long dark hair and, like a magnificent stole, entwined in a wide arc by a blue-patterned snake. It stares at the viewer from the woman's shoulder as inscrutably as the woman does. Stuck made a rather conventional comment about the dazzling motif: "Sin / Sucking with glowing eyes / white breasts bursting with lust / […] lures the naked woman to seduction, / but right next to it […] licks the poisonous snake" (quoted in Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker, Franz von Stuck. The Collection of the Museum Villa Stuck, Munich 1997, p. 64). Stuck titled a preparatory etching from 1891 "Sensuality." With its clearly positive connotations, the motif occupied the centerpiece of the "artist's altar" in Stuck's opulent Munich villa—above the self-portrait bronze "The Athlete" and the "Dancer," modeled after his wife Mary. The secular form of the altar was now occupied with the profane "life," a central concept in contemporary thought. A new generation of artists adopted from Friedrich Nietzsche the myth of the individual, powerful power of the individual and a new appreciation of body and desire. The Artist: Franz von Stuck (1863 – 1928) was a German painter, sculptor, printmaker, and architect. From 1881 to 1885 Stuck attended the Munich Academy. Stuck's subject matter was primarily from mythology, inspired by the work of Arnold Böcklin. Large forms dominate most of his paintings and indicate his proclivities for sculpture.
