Emil Rau (1858 - 1937) was a German painter. He received his artistic training from Leon Pohle and Ferdinand Wilhelm Pauwels at the Academy in Dresden. In 1879, he changed to the Munich Academy as a student of Alexander Wagner and Wilhelm von Lindenschmit. Although he comes from the Lindenschmit School, Rau is strongly influenced by the Defregger circle in his choice of rural motifs.
