ABOUT THE WORK Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer Above The Sea Of Fog was created in 1817 and the original painting is in Hamburger Kunsthalle. The original size of the work is 94,8 x 74,8 cm and is made of oil on canvas. "The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" is considered the epitome of Romanticism today. No other work by Caspar David Friedrich is so frequently reproduced or revisited, and chosen in ever-changing variations as a starting point for pictorial inventions. Yet the painting is rather unusual within Friedrich's oeuvre: Firstly, it is one of the few portrait formats by his hand, and secondly, Friedrich rarely placed a single individual so large and conspicuously at the center of a pictorial composition. While the history of reception testifies to how deeply many viewers still try to empathize with the figure of the wanderer, Friedrich's primary concern may not have been such identification. He shows us a figure from behind, whose position is not readily accessible to us. Furthermore, we are denied what the wanderer is looking at. Instead of being able to enjoy the majestic mountain landscape unhindered, we look at a viewer. Therefore, Friedrich's Wanderer invites us to reflect on the way we see. The Artist: Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation.
