ABOUT THIS PIECE Post Impressionist Painter Paul Cezanne's Chestnut Trees at the Jas de Bouffan was created in 1887 and the painting is in Minneapolis Institute of Art. The original size of the work is 73 x 92 cm and is made of oil on canvas. This painting represents an avenue on the grounds of Paul Cézanne's family estate in southern France in Aix-en-Provence. In this view, he carefully recorded the color and light of the wintry scene, with its tracery of bare branches against the sky. To create an ordered pictorial design, he selected this particular view, emphasizing its rigorous horizontal and vertical structures. In depicting the chestnut trees, he employed multiple viewpoints; this collapses depth, meshing the two parallel rows of trees into a web that seems to exist in one plane. The Artist: Paul Cézanne, (1839 - 1906), French painter, one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists, whose works and ideas were influential in the aesthetic development of many 20th-century artists and art movements, especially Cubism.
